Classes

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a style of grappling that focuses on leverage & positional control to control an opponent.  It was first introduced to America by the Gracie Family who’s martial arts root back to 1925.  Jiu Jitsu utilizes submissions such as joint locks and chokeholds to secure the win.  We teach both in the gi, which is the standard martial arts uniform that is traditionally worn, and no-gi, which is simply wearing shorts and a rashguard.  Proper Jiu Jitsu can help a smaller person overcome a larger & stronger opponent.  In addition to the merits of self-defense, Jiu Jitsu is a fun & exciting way to engage in exercise that otherwise may be repetitive and boring.

Judo

Judo is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport that focuses on throwing an opponent and then finishing with a submission or a pin.  Judo was founded in 1882 by Professor Jigaro Kano and gained popularity when it was adopted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department for self-defense.  Judo utilizes arm & hip throws along with foot sweeps to create powerful takedowns.  Larger & more powerful opponents may still be easily thrown through the concept of “kuzushi” or “off-balancing”.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai Kickboxing is a fighting style that utilizes punches, kicks, elbows, and knees when striking.  Proper striking is important for those who are looking not just to compete in kickboxing, but it is also needed in MMA and street self-defense.  Our kickboxing classes are a  high-energy environment that will not only teach you important combat skills, you will also earn an intense cardio workout.

Wrestling

Wrestling is the world’s oldest sport and still one of the cornerstones of combat sports.  Wrestling is not only valuable for the sake of its own sport, but being able to effectively control the takedown and takedown defense is of the utmost importance in a fight.  The goals in wrestling of taking down an opponent and controlling them on the mat perfectly integrate with so many other forms of combat sports.

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA is one of the newest and most popular combat sports.  MMA is a blend of striking and grappling where most competitors are well-versed in disciplines such as Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing and Muay Thai.  MMA is generally contested in a cage, which provides its own environmental challenges.  Those who chose to compete generally begin in local amateur events before progressing to regional professional leagues with the goal of reaching the premier leagues such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Youth Classes

Our youth martial arts program incorporates the fundamentals of all our core disciplines including Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling and Kickboxing.  Our primary goal is to impart the highest-quality self-defense skills into your child as well as the confidence to stand up for themselves.

We have a unique approach to youth martial arts here at Gracie Ocean City. While not required, we strongly encourage a parent to step on the mats and coach their own children alongside our professional instructors. While we certainly can & will independently train your child, we also recognize the importance of spending time with your family.

Everyone is caught up in the rush. The kids are at school all day and you are at work. The brief time you have at home in the evenings is restricted with homework for the kids and household chores for the parents. Why squander a perfect opportunity to bond with your children just sitting on the bench watching your kids learn, when you could be the one teaching them?

It’s ok that you don’t know anything about Jiu Jitsu. Neither do your kids. But we do and we’ll guide you along the process. We want to give you the opportunity to be the hero your child believes you are so when other kids ask them, “Who taught you how to protect yourself?” your child will quickly respond, “My Daddy did!!”

We’ve recently expanded our youth classes that now include Monday & Wednesday Jiu Jitsu at 5:30pm and Friday Kickboxing at 6pm. Give us a call today to learn more about how you can be your child’s hero.
